The National Peace Council (NPC) has expressed concern over the recent violence at Bawku, in the Upper East Region; and Ejura in the Ashanti Region, urging calm and non-violent measures to address grievances in both communities.
In a statement issued on Monday, January 13, 2025, the NPC condemned the tragic incidents, which saw the deaths of two individuals in Bawku and the attack on a police station at Ejura after a detainee reportedly died in custody.
"The Council extends condolences to the bereaved families and entreats the people in these communities to remain calm and resort to non-violent, and peaceful means of addressing their grievance," it stated.
The Council also called for immediate, amicable solutions to the disputes.
“We urge the Ghana Police Service to exercise maximum restraint, circumspection, and professionalism in handling these delicate situations to prevent further escalation,” it added.
Addressing the situation at Ejura, the Council assured the community that it would collaborate with the Ashanti Regional Peace Council and other stakeholders to engage local leaders, youth, and the police to foster peace and coexistence.
“We are mindful of the incident that occurred in June 2021, and with the current impasse, we will ensure that all stakeholders in Ejura, including the youth and police, are engaged to secure lasting peace,” it affirmed.
For the people of Bawku, the NPC promised ongoing support to reinstate the Inter-Ethnic Peace Committee, working alongside the Upper East Regional Office and other partners to ensure sustainable peace in the area.
“We are committed to working with the chiefs, the people of Bawku, and all relevant stakeholders to address the challenges they face and bring long-term peace to the region,” it noted.
