Need to reduce road accidents - Fiati

Koforidua(ER), Dec. 1, GNA - Mr Vincent Fiati, Eastern Regional Director of Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), has expressed concerned about the high rate of road accidents in the Region. He has therefore appealed to stakeholders in the industry to collaborate to reduce the spate of road accidents. Mr Fiati expressed the concern in an interview with Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Koforidua after inspecting two separate road accidents that occurred at Bunso Junction at the weekend. He attributed most road accidents to over speeding by commercial and private drivers and appealed to the police to ensure offenders were prosecuted to serve as a deterrent. Mr Fiati blamed lack of maintenance of vehicles as another cause of accidents and gave the assurance that the DVLA would collaborate with the police to check vehicles that were not well maintained in the Region.

He appealed to Ministry of Transportation to ensure regular maintenance on the roads to prevent accidents. Mr Fiati noted that some drivers did not understand some road marking in the Region especially those at Bunso Junction and Apedwa Junction which were accident prone areas in the Region. He called on road engineers to redesign the road marking at these areas to enable drivers to identify and understand them. Mr Fiati said his outfit registered 1,110 vehicles by the end of July this year as against 926 within the same period in 2007.
