Accra, (Greater Accra) 29 Oct. The Ministry of Health has appointed Dr K. Holdbrook-Smith, a surgeon, as the Chief Administrator for the Korle- Bu Teaching Hospital. Dr Holdbrook-Smith who assumes duty on November one succeeds Commodore Kwame Pumpuni whose contractual agreement with the Ministry has elapsed. A senior official of the Ministry told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that the decision to replace Commodore Pumpuni was taken in consultation with the hospital's Board. In a background brief, the official explained that the Ministry engaged Cdre Pumpuni initially as the Chief Administrator for the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, Kumasi, in 1992. He was later posted to Korle-Bu to succeed Colonel John Kabore on a yearly renewable contract. The official said Cdre Pumpuni only renewed the contract up to 1995 and has since not reapplied. This has resulted in the deletion of his name from the pay vouchers by the Controller and Accountant- General's Department. Following the deletion of his name from the vouchers, the hospital took over payment of Cdre Pumpuni's remuneration from its own sources until he was officially notified six weeks ago to hand over to a new administrator at the end of October. The official said the appointment of Dr Holdbrook-Smith was done through the appropriate channel and with no malice against Cdre Pumpuni.
