New NUGS executives to overhaul activities of the Union

Winneba (C/R) Oct. 9 GNA-The new President of the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) Mr. Samuel Okudzeto on Saturday said that he is committed to the constitutional amendment and general overhaul of the activities and conventions of NUGS.

He said the current state of "our NUGS constitution and our practices attracted politicians to cause the infiltration we all so much condemn".

Mr. Okudzeto said these after a 10-member newly executives of the Union were sworn into office for one year at the University of Education, Winneba.

He said there would not be hypocrisy in this regard and their "resolution in cleansing the union was unflinching." The President said his position on the ever "rising capitation fees and sale of nomination forms to aspirants is an outright abolishment still holds".

The NUGS President expressed grave concern about the postponement of dates for the take off of the students' loans scheme, which he said, was creating problems and difficulties to students and their leaders.

He said NUGS would praise Government when due and would not hesitate to fight for their fair share of the national cake. "Let me take this opportunity to caution the elements amongst us who have made themselves agents of political parties and would chose to mortgage the interest of their suffering constituents to some politicians," adding, "these errand boys and girls have no job this year,"

The NUGS President said the organisation is independent and would not seek the "parochial interest of any political party, our mandate and focus shall be only to our constituents- a NUGS of students by students and for students."

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Education Winneba, Professor Jophus Anamuah-Mensah said the new executives are coming into office at the time that most of the Universities were facing problems and hoped that they would assist the smooth-running of the University administration.

Neenyi Ghartey VII, Omanhene of Effutu Traditional Area, who chaired the function appealed to the government to help address problems involving the computerization of SSS admission system to alleviate the suffering of parents and guardians.
