Mr. Godfred Axolu, Nkoranza Municipal Director of Education, has commended Dr (Mrs.) Inneke Bossman, a retired Dutch doctor, for spearheading the establishment of the Nkoranza Special School for the Mentally Handicapped.
He said the facility had created opportunity for the enrolment of children from communities in Brong-Ahafo Region and beyond.
Mr. Axolu made the commendation during an address to the staff and students when he visited the school on Tuesday.
He said the School was carved out of an orphanage and a mentally-handicapped home known as Hand-in-Hand Peace for Christ Community (PCC) which was started by Dr. (Mrs.) Bossman in 1992.
Mr. Axolu said Dr. (Mrs.) Bossman was by then a doctor at the Nkoranza Saint Theresa’s Catholic Hospital, adding that with her concern for the plight of mentally-challenged children, the Dutch medical doctor passionately established the PCC to cater for their needs.
Mr. Axolu later paid a courtesy call on Dr. (Mrs.) Bossman in her residence at Nkoranza to congratulate her for establishing the PCC 23 years ago, which had now metamorphosed into a full-fledged Special School for Mentally-Handicapped children.
He also praised Madam Margaret Owusu, the first House Mother of the School for her dedicated and meritorious services to the children.
Dr (Mrs.) Bossman expressed appreciation to Mr. Axolu for his visit to the School and mentioned that lack of access road to the place was one of their major challenges.
She therefore pleaded with the Municipal Director of Education to contact the Nkoranza Municipal Assembly on behalf of the Management of the School for the construction of an access route to the School.
Mr. Vincent Kaatuu, Acting Headmaster of the School, said the school had a population of 145 pupils and students with 40 of them boarders.
Mr. Kaatuu complained inadequate boarding facilities was limiting intake to School and therefore appealed to the Municipal Assembly and other stakeholders to assist the School with beds to increase admission.
Pupils of the school are trained in kente weaving, dressmaking, beads processing and other vocational programmes.
