Correspondence from Western Region
A one hour heavy down pour on Friday at NKroful in Ellembelle District, Western Region has caused flooding and destruction of some properties in the community.
The rains which started at dawn on Friday has caused fear and panic among some residents, as they alarmed subsequent rains in the coming days could cause more damage in Nkroful.
A visit by GhanaWeb to the hometown of the first President of the Republic of Ghana, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, saw residents pouring out their frustrations to the chief and the government.
Some residents who spoke to GhanaWeb attributed the cause of the flood to recent galamsey activities in the area.
"This flood is caused by the illegal mining (alluvial mining) some people are doing at the back of Nkroful Agricultural Senior High School and Nkroful township... We have been complaining about it several times but they don't mind us," he reiterated.
They said the illegal mining activities have had effects on the only source of drinking water in the community.
"We have a lot to say to the government because you look at our secondary school just here and people are doing galamsey here. The whole Nkroful our only source of water here, they have polluted it and right now we don't have water to drink and use some for bathing" a resident told GhanaWeb.
They, therefore, appealed to the government to intervene and stop the galamsey activities.
