No bush fires in Nkoranza district last year

Bonsu (B/A), July 21, GNA - Mr Kwaku Agyapong, Zonal Coordinator of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) at Bonsu in Nkoranza District, has commended fire volunteers in the zone for their hard work and efforts in preventing bushfires last year.

He told Ghana News Agency at Bonsu at the weekend that the volunteers ensured that farmers did not go to their farms with fire during the dry season and also monitored the activities of palm wine tappers.

They did not allow people to go on group hunting, as hunters were known to be the cause of bushfires every year, he added. The NADMO Coordinator urged the volunteers not to feel complacent but to maintain the spirit and work harder to prevent bushfires in the ensuing years.

"Assembly Members, Chiefs and Unit Committees should support and encourage the fire volunteers to save the communities against fire disasters", he said.

Mr Agyapong announced that the Nkoranza District Assembly had arranged for incentive packages for communities that do not record bushfires during the dry seasons and appealed to the people to aim at benefiting from the package.

He paid special tribute to Mr Stephen Manu, chairman of the zone's fire volunteers, for his good leadership in mobilizing the volunteers to fight bushfires.
