Concerns over alleged irregularities in the collation of results have sparked tensions in the Dome-Kwabenya Constituency, with Mike Oquaye Jnr., the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Parliamentary Candidate, calling for calm and adherence to the rule of law.
Speaking at a press briefing on Tuesday, December 10, 2024, he condemned what he described as undemocratic practices by the National Democratic Congress (NDC), alleging that results were collated without representatives from other parties.
"We respect Ghanaians and the rule of law because we want to follow due process, but no one should think that they can usurp democracy and go and count and collate without the presence of other party people. This is against the law," he stated.
He appealed to his supporters to avoid violence, emphasising, "No one on my side should go and fight a fellow brother; let the rules work."
Despite his concerns, the NDC's parliamentary candidate, Faustina Elikplim Akurugu, emerged victorious in the highly contested race.
She won with 51,634 votes, while Mike Oquaye Jnr secured with 50,477 votes.
Her win is particularly notable after her two previous unsuccessful attempts against outgoing MP Sarah Adwoa Safo, who has held the seat since 2012.
