The National Peace Council (NPC) says it cannot put a time frame on the mediation of the dialogue between the two major political parties on the need to stop the activities of political vigilante groups in the country.

The Council said with the kick-start of the mediation on Tuesday, it will continue meeting with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and New Patriotic Party (NPP) until an amicable resolution is reached.

At the maiden meeting in Accra on Tuesday, the two major political parties emphasized the need to stop the activities of political vigilante groups in the country.

Both parties have among other things, agreed to stop the ownership, hiring and the utilization of vigilante or militia groups by political members.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Onua FM’s Yen Sempa hosted by Bright Kwasi Asempa on Wednesday, Chairman of the National Peace Council Rt Rev Professor Emmanuel Asante said “this is the first step and we have not settled on anything”.

“We need to have commitment of the parties so we shall meet again on April 29”.

Prof Asante explained that “we cannot put time frame on this. We need to discuss and dialogue on the issue until we find a solution to it”.

He promised that an amicable solution would be reach before the 2020 elections to avert political parties using vigilante groups.

“It will end before 2020 election”.
