The Parent/Teacher Association (PTA) of the Nsawam Senior High School (SHS) has called for the urgent relocation of the school.
“This will save it from its present deplorable state and to improve the learning atmosphere for the students,” a statement signed by Mr Mensah Yeboah, Chairman of the PTA, and 10 other parents and copied to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Koforidua on Thursday said.
The statement said since the school was established in 1991, students had been studying under deplorable conditions, especially when it sits in the middle of a slum area and near the noisy Municipal Market.
It said the school presently sits on a two-acre land which makes expansion virtually impossible, “having been hemmed in all four corners by public residential accommodation.”
According to the statement, the small area of the present location had also made it impossible to run hostel accommodation for its students from far, as a result of which such students face diverse challenges.
The statement said the PTA had worked hard at making relocation of the school possible by spearheading the acquisition of a 40.7 acre land from the government on the Aburi/ Nsawam road.
It said the Lands Commission had approved its site plan and issued a ‘Right of Entry’ to the school.
“However, some people have become a sort of land guards on the land, claiming that compensation was not paid to their forefathers as regards a stretch of land which includes the part allocated to the school,” it said.
The statement said the land guards had made right of entry to the land impossible, and as a result, a six-unit classroom block, which the school had to benefit from the government in 2010, could not be built due to the activities of the land guards.
It appealed to the Regional Education Office to urgently expedite action on the relocation of the school to enable effective, quality teaching and learning for their children.
The statement also appealed to the Municipal Assembly to secure the land for development to start on it in the interest of the students.
