Cloth sellers in Takoradi in the Western region have staged a semi- nude protest to express their frustration and anger with the anti-pirate textile taskforce.
The angry traders also clashed with the taskforce as the team went about seizing pirated textiles in some markets in the Takoradi metropolis.
The semi-nude sellers fiercely opposed the seizure of their merchandise and threatened to electrocute the task force officers when they return for another operation.
Faustina Amoakwah, spokesperson for the Cloth sellers in Takoradi said it is absurd for their merchandise to be seized when the government imports furniture from China to furnish the West African country’s parliament and judiciary.
“We import a lot of things in Ghana, even in Parliament, [they] have China chairs so what are they telling us not to buy made-in-China goods?
“Everybody knows toothpicks, toothpaste and a lot of things come from China so why haven’t they seized all those things,” Amoakwah asked angrily.
“Next time, exposing [our breasts won't] be enough; we would electrify [them]…they came with Police to arrest us, are we robbers? They came with guns,” Amoakwah said.
But leader of the task force, John Kwesi Amoah in an interview with Starr News said the taskforce will go ahead with the swoop despite the opposition from the traders.
