Number of females in Assemblies in Northern region reduces

Tamale, Jan. 25, GNA - Nineteen out of 137 females who contested the 2010 District Assembly Elections in the Northern Region were elected.

The figure, compared to the 2006 results shows a reduction of 19 as 38 females' secured seats in the 2006 Dstrict Assembly Elections in the region.

This is contained in a statement issued by the Northern Region Electoral Commission and signed by Mr. Sylvester Kanyi, the Regional Director.

The Bole District with 27 electoral areas, 27 males elected no female. The voter turnout was 35.51 percent as compared to a voter turnout of 49.7 percent in 2006.

The Sawla/Tuna/Kalba District with 33 electoral areas saw 31 males elected with one female. The area had a voter turnout of 47.02 percent as compared to 54.1 percent in 2006.

In the West Gonja district which had 27 electoral areas with a voter turnout of 46.79 percent as compared to 56.6 percent in 2006, 25 males and two females were elected to the assembly.

In the Central Gonja District with 30 electoral areas 29 males and one female were elected. The voter turnout was 43.85 percent as compared 54 percent in 2006.

In the East Gonja District with 35 electoral areas, 35 males were elected with no female. The voter turnout was 46.28 percent in 2010 as compared to 58.4 percent in 2006.

For the Kpandai District which had 27 electoral areas 27 males were elected with no female. The voter turnout was 62.78 percent for 2010.

For the Nanumba North and South districts which had 42 and 28 electoral areas respectively, 40 males and two females and 28 males and no female where respectively elected.

Nanumaba North had a voter turnout of 54.55 percent as compared to a voter turnout of 49.5 percent in 2006 while Nanumba South had a voter turnout of 65.63 percent as compared to 50.2 percent in 2006.

For the Zabzugu/Tatale District with an electoral area of 34, 33 males and one female were elected. The percent turnout was 55.05 as compared to 52.5 percent in 2006.

In the Yendi Municipality with 50 electoral areas, 50 males got elected with no female. The percentage turnout was 53.91 as compared to 50.5 percent in 2006.

In the Saboba District which has 25 electoral areas all the elected assembly members were male. The area had a voter turnout of 63.55 percent as compared to 57.69 percent in 2006.

In the Chereponi and Gushiegu districts which have 20 and 25 electoral areas respectively, 20 and 23 males were also respectively elected with two females elected in Chereponi and none for Gushiegu.

For the Karaga District with 33 electoral areas, 31 males and two females were elected. Voter turnout was 51.66 percent as compared to 61.7 percent in 2006.

In the Savelugu/Nanton District with 45 electoral areas 44 males were elected with no female. Voter turnout was 52.55 percent as compared to 58.5 in 2006.

In the Tamale Metropolis with 64 electoral areas, 63 males were elected with one female. Voter turnout was 36.21 percent as against 48.3 percent in 2006.

In the Tolon/Kumbungu District with 48 electoral areas, 46 males were elected with two females. Voter turnout was 53.22 percent as compared to 57.4 percent in 2006.

For the West and East Mamprusi districts which had 43 and 36 electoral areas respectively, 38 and 36 males were also respectively elected with 5 females elected for the West Mamprusi assembly and none for East Mamprusi.

For the Bunkprugu District with 33 electoral areas, 33 males were elected with no female. Voter turnout was 52.57 percent as compared to 56.0 percent in 2006.

In all, the Northern Region in 2010 recorded 53.1 percent voter turnout for the district assemblies elections as compared to 56 percent recorded in 2006.
