Nurse advises pregnant women to avoid self-medication

Mpatasie (Ash), Sept 21, GNA - A Public Health nurse has appealed to pregnant women not to resort to self-medication because it could lead to serious consequences.

Mrs Beatrice Agyei of the Kuntanase Government Hospital expressed regret that most pregnant women refuse to attend antenatal clinics during pregnancy.

She was speaking at a health education campaign programme on Safe Motherhood organized by the Bosomtwe-Atwima-Kwanwoma District Health directorate at Mpatasie on Tuesday. Mrs Agyei said malaria and anaemia could be detected in pregnant women who attend antenatal clinics so as to avoid complications during delivery.

Mr Rueben Osei-Antwi, Health Information Officer for the district, said the district recorded 13 maternal deaths over the past four years and that the District Health Directorate has since last year embarked on a programme to educate pregnant women to attend antenatal clinics.
