The District Court at La has ordered Police Prosecutors to furnish the Court with a hospital report indicating the age of the final-year Senior High School student of O’Reilly Senior High School accused of killing another student.
This was after the prosecution, led by Chief Inspector Paul Osei Adjei holding brief for the substantive prosecutor, indicated to the Court that steps have been taken and the report is set to be ready tomorrow (Friday, September 20).
Edward Borketey Sackey was murdered by a classmate after a disagreement over who had wealthier parents.
In Court on Thursday, September 19, 2024, Chief Inspector Paul Osei Adjei said the postmortem report is ready while the blood samples of the accused (name withheld) have been taken by the Police Hospital.
He, therefore, prayed for at least a week’s adjournment, but the Court declined that request.
The Magistrate, Her Worship Adwoa Benaso Asumadu-Sakyi, said a case of such public interest cannot be allowed to delay.
The Court wondered what the prosecution was doing with the two-week period that the case was adjourned to September 6.
The Magistrate said it is incumbent on the prosecution to ensure that processes that are to assist the court in dealing with the case are dealt with expeditiously.
Consequently, the Court ordered that the hospital report indicating the age of the accused should be produced to the Court tomorrow, Friday, September 20.
EIB Network’s Legal Affairs Correspondent, Murtala Inusah, reports that on Friday the case would be called at 1:00 PM.
The plea of the accused, whose age has become a subject of confusion, has not been taken.
Though the family of the deceased claims he is 24 years old, others also say 18 years, a development that has called for medical examination to ascertain his age.
