OATUU applaud women for their contribution to society

The Organization of African Trade Union Unity (OATUU) on the International Women’s Day commended women all over the world for contributing immensely to the development of humanity irrespective of the challenges they face.

“Still confronted with challenges such as discrimination, inequalities, violence, poverty and lack of respect for their fundamental human rights, women have not relented in their apt to contribute to the development of society” it said.

A statement issued in Accra and signed by Mr Arezki Mezhoud expresses OATUU’s concern about gender-sensitive measures and intervention for the promotion of gender mainstreaming in all spheres and levels of human endeavours.

It noted that effective measures should be taken to curb the inequalities and discrimination so as to position women at their best for progress in development and poverty alleviation.

With the theme “Empowering Women, Empowering Humanity: Picture it!” the OATUU nodded its agreement with the UN Secretary’s statement, which was “When we unleash the power of women, we can secure the future for all”.

The statements emphasized that it was time to focus greater attention on women’s rights and gender equality by mobilizing all stake holders to work towards their empowerment for the betterment of humanity and sustainable development.

“Emphasis should be placed on the Beijing Platform for Action’s 12 critical areas of concern that envisions a world where each woman and girl can exercise her choices, such as participating in politics, getting an education, having decent work and income and living in societies free from violence” it added.

It stated that OATUU recognizes the potentials of women in impacting positively on socio-economic achievements today and the years ahead.

It urged all trade unions in Africa and beyond to empower women in all areas of life and in the world of work through enhancement of skills, knowledge and use of information technology.
