The Osagyefo Youth Movement Unification Council has cautioned Ghanaians against supporting certain independent presidential candidates as the country prepares for the 2024 elections.

The council is advocating for the consolidation of smaller political parties to form a united front, aiming to challenge the two dominant political parties, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

During a press conference held on October 7, 2024, in Accra, the president of the council, Gyesi Nimako, expressed disappointment in several smaller political parties and independent candidates who have refused to join the alliance.

According to Nimako, the refusal stems from what he described as “selfish interests” rather than a commitment to the country's progress.

"We initially sent letters and invitations to these parties, urging them to reconsider their decisions to run separately in the upcoming elections. Our belief is that it will be nearly impossible for an independent candidate to secure victory against the two main political forces in the country,” Nimako said.

He continued, “If it's not for selfish interest, why aren’t they here? They know they cannot win on their own, which is why we are calling on all of them to unite.

"We proposed selecting one person among us, and we would all rally behind that individual to compete in the elections. But they have refused, despite receiving and confirming our letters.”

Nimako urged Ghanaians to be cautious in voting for these independent candidates, claiming that their refusal to unite suggests they are motivated by personal ambitions rather than the nation’s well-being.

The independent candidates mentioned by the council include Nana Ofori, Dr. Edward Ohene Kye, Dr. Kenneth Ofosu-Barko, Nana Kwame Bediako, Stanley Dugah, Apostle Kumankuma Darkwa, Kojo Gyesi Nimako, Sam Ankrah, Osahene Nana Boateng, Ernesto Yeboah among others.

In a move to strengthen their coalition, the Osagyefo Youth Movement Unification Council has selected Kofi Koranteng, an independent candidate, to lead the alliance.

The council called on the public to rally behind Koranteng as their chosen candidate for the 2024 presidential race.
