Accra, July 5 GNA - Mr Nii Ayi Kwei Mankatah, National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament (MP) for Odododiodoo, died in Accra on Monday after a short illness, a family spokesman said on Tuesday. The spokesman said 64-year-old MP was being treated for malaria at the Usher Fort Clinic at James Town, Accra.
He was later sent to the Intensive Care Unit of the 37 Military Hospital, where he was diagnosed for diabetes, hypertension and kidney problems.
Mr Mankatah died on Monday at 1630 hours at the Cardio-thoracic Centre, Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, shortly after he had been transferred from the 37 Military Hospital.
Mr Ayi Kwei Mankatah also known as "Tsofatse" left behind a wife and 14 children.
Before he became the MP for Odododiodoo, he was a member of the Greater Accra Regional Executives of the NDC. He joined the erstwhile State Farms where he rose through the ranks and became a senior clerk.
Mr Mankatah undertook various courses in Italy and the former Soviet Union.
James Town residents mourn Odododiodoo MP
Joy Online --Residents of James Town centre of the Odododiodoo constituency are mourning the late NDC MP Samuel Nii Ayikwei Manckarta who died on Monday night at the Cardiothoracic Centre of the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital. Reports gathered by JOY News team that visited the constituency of the late MP indicate that his death was rumored a few times before his eventual death.
Sympathizers of the late MP were seen wearing red armbands to show their sorrow at his death.
A few of the mourners were also clad in NDC colours to show their political affiliation. People had also assembled in clusters discussing the news.
The residents of James town were mainly having a hard time accepting the news. Some were still in denial when Joy News spoke to them.
?This morning I just got off a taxi and somebody called me and said Charlie your man is gone. I was shocked so I went to the house to verify and I saw people in red and NDC colours,?
The residents gave various reasons for mourning his death.
?The man is very humble and good, we like the man, we wished he would have done something for the area,? one resident said.
At the family home, relatives were receiving sympathizers.
The head of family Nathaniel Amui Mensah Kojo, said although they knew his condition was serious the news of his demise came as a shock to them.
Mr Kojo said officials from the NDC have already been to the home to pay their respects.
Samuel Mankata according to the family head was survived by two wives and some eighteen children.
