Residents of Odorkor, a suburb of Accra, have expressed their frustrations to the authorities of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) for neglecting the overflowed gutters leading from their homes to the main road on the Odorkor highway.
Over a year now, the dirty water which stretches from Odorkor Police Station through to Hansonic, Dansoman Junction has become a breeding place for mosquitoes and poses health risks for residents.
Residents’ reactions
“The overflowed gutter has been here for the past one year and it is worrisome, it smells and eating is difficult. It has also affected our daily sales because people find it difficult to patronize our goods. You could sometimes see excreta and garbage floating on the dirty water”, Abena, a trader said.
Another trader, Efe pleaded with the government to come to their aid because there have been a series of media reportage on the same issue but to no avail. The Assemblyman of the area also visited the area but has since not done anything about it.
Several potholes have been created in front of homes, banks, the Odorkor Police Station and other institutions, along the stretch of the affected area.
It is an eyesore to see such developments along a major route to the Central and Western Region of Ghana where most tourists ply to tourist sites.
Unimpressive government interventions
Sanitation which has been a major challenge in Ghana for the past years have seen past and present governments made several promises to minimize the canker but to no avail. Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, president of Ghana on 24th April, 2017 promised to make Accra the cleanest city in Africa by 2020 but little has been done so far.
Accra generates about 3000 metric tonnes of waste in a day and it is high time, sanitation is taken seriously by the citizenry and the government to eradicate diseases and have a clean environment.
At the time of filing this report, the Assemblyman and the Member of Parliament (MP) were not readily available for their comments and reactions.
