The police has given a vivid account of how a shooting incident at Ofankor, a suburb of Accra, led to the unfortunate death of a tenant, saying he was shot 4 times by the landlord.

Victor Stephen Nana Kankam, a 38-year-old is said to have shot 31-year-old Benjamin Okyere, for refusing to pack out from the room although his rent was not due.

DSP George Asare, Mile 7 District Commander in an interview on Peace FM’s morning show said the tenant was shot multiple times by the landlord who had two pump action guns.

“He shot his chest. His heart is torn into pieces. He shot his ribs; virtually everything in the stomach is messed up. It appears he targeted the deceased’s penis as well but the bullet hit his thigh. That part of the body looks scary. It is as though a tiger attacked him. The landlord left after shooting the tenant,” DSP Asare stated.

The police officer further mentioned that the suspect had 57 cartridges when the police picked him out from his residence at Ofankor Spot-M.

Beyond the rent, the deceased and the suspect, according to information gathered by the police, had disagreements over a woman.

"Information reaching us is that the landlord was a womanizer. Another lady also confirmed that indeed, he is into lots of women. The landlord told the tenant that he likes a certain woman who he was very 'free' with, so he (the deceased) should 'link' him to the girl," DSP George Asare stated.

He further said the deceased succeeded in helping the landlord spark a romantic affair with the lady. However, the deceased liaised with the lady to milk the landlord dry, as she requested for several sums of money and gifts from the landlord.

"The deceased agreed to connect the two of them, and the girl, with assistance from the deceased spent lots of the landlord's money," DSP Asare added.

The landlord, having realized the ‘partnership’ between the deceased and the lady to empty his pockets, devised a way to take revenge by ensuring that the deceased moved out when his rent was due.

The deceased, during an altercation with the landlord on May 25 - a day before the expiration of his rent - asked for enough time to evacuate. In the heat of the argument, the landlord who had an AK47 rifle on him, shot Otchere at close, the police said.

I shot in self-defense - Landlord

The police has said the landlord, during interrogations, said he shot and killed the tenant in self-defense.

"He claims the deceased once threatened him. He claims the deceased told him 'wait, you'll see what I'll do to you' during an altercation so he want there with the gun for self-defense," the police officer told host of Kokrokoo Kwame Sefa Kayi.

Meanwhile the Abeka District Court has remanded the suspect into police custody. He is expected to reappear on June 8, 2020.
