The police have arrested a ride-hailing driver, General Constable Smith Gyeke who was later identified as an off-duty Police officer, for allegedly shooting a male adult at Koans Estate near Kuntunse in Accra on Sunday, 18th August 2024.
A press release issued by the police on Monday, August 19, 2024, said the incident occurred around 4:00 am on Sunday following an alleged confrontation between the deceased, identified as Stanley Ahadzi, and General Constable Smith Gyeke over a disputed fare.
It said the body of the deceased has been deposited at the Police Hospital morgue for preservation and autopsy, while the suspect is in Police custody as part of the investigation into the incident.
"Meanwhile, the Inspector-General of Police, Dr George Akuffo Dampare and members of the Police Management Board (POMAB) have visited the family of the deceased to commiserate with them and assured them that the incident will be fully investigated and the officer involved will be made to face justice.
"A Police clinical psychologist and other officers have been assigned to the family to support them through this difficult time," it stated.
The police assured the public, especially the family, that justice will be served.
