Some officers who lined up on Monday to get registered for their national identification card had to return to their bases in disappointment.

The nationwide registration exercise is scheduled to have started in the Greater Accra Region on Monday.

The exercise was to begin at 7:00am at some key state agencies and institutions like Jubilee House, Parliament, Judicial Service and the various security bodies.

At Burma Camp, Media General’s Kwabena Adu-Gyamfi reported on 3FM’s Midday News that about 20 officers had queued in the morning in readiness for the exercise.

However, after waiting for registration officials from the National Identification Authority (NIA) in vain, the officers retreated to their bases.

There was no official statement from NIA regarding the absence of its officials at registration centres.

From the headquarters of NIA in Accra, Media General’s Evelyn Tengmaa also reported that the exercise started hours later.

Officials cited technical hiccoughs for the delay.

Staff of the Authority had thronged the registrations centre to get their Ghana Cards.

Our reporter observed that the staff are mostly registration officers and they were yet to be deployed for the Greater Accra Region exercise, which is scheduled to take three months.

Meanwhile, the Authority is said to be preparing to release a statement on the development so far.
