Officials urged to support UDS

Bolgatanga, April 13, GNA - Regional Ministers, Members of Parliament and district assemblies, operating within the catchment area of the University for Development Studies (UDS), have been asked to support the university.

Professor Kaku Nekoe, the acting Vice-Chancellor of UDS, made the appeal when he met the Upper East Regional Minister, Mr. Mark Woyongo to brief him on the progress and problems of the university and to ask for his support, in Bolgatanga, He urged the officials to help the university to provide more infrastructure since the university was expanding its academic programmes.

Prof. Nekoe said that the Upper West Regional Coordinating Council had pledged to build a hall of residence for students of the university. He appealed to the Upper East Regional Minister to also ensure infrastructural development for university. Prof. Nekoe said reports from organizations where UDS undergraduates were doing practical training indicated that they were performing well.

He attribute the success to the fact that they were operating the trimester system that required them to live in communities and identify the needs of the people and assist in finding solutions to the problems. He asked stakeholders in development to apply research findings of students in solving problems of the communities.

Prof. Nekoe appealed to the district assemblies to implement research findings of UDS students to help solve problems of the communities.

Mr. Woyongo assured Prof. Nekoe that under the current government, much attention would be given to the development of the UDS and the Tamale Teaching Hospital.

He appealed to the university to admit more students from the less endowed Senior High Schools in its catchment area.
