Oguaaman Union to focus on human resource development

Cape Coast, Nov. 28, GNA - The President of the Oguaaman Union, Mr Ted Bernasko, on Saturday stressed the determination of the Union to help improve the human resource base of the town for the accelerated development.

He said the Union would sponsor between 40 and 80 brilliant but needy students in the area at junior secondary school (JSS) level every year.

Mr Bernasko who is a Pharmacist said the Union would also engage teachers to give them special tuition to enable them to qualify for Senior Secondary Schools (SSS) in the municipality.

Speaking at the inauguration of the Oguaaman Union, at Cape Coast, he said those students would also be assisted to continue to the tertiary level to enable them to get good job placement and later to contribute to the socio-economic development of Cape Coast. He expressed concern about the fact that most JSS pupils from the area did not qualify for schools in the municipality and pledged that the Union apart from education, would also support sectors such as the environment, health and the economic development of Cape Coast.

Mr Bernasko said it was sad that the town, which was once the cradle of education and economics, was now saddled with a lot of problems including unemployment, poverty, illiteracy and poor health, particularly HIV/AIDS and appealed to citizens both in and outside the town to assist the union to achieve its goals.

He said the Union would promote peace and foster unity among the citizens as well as mobilise them towards the development of the area and serve as a pressure group.

It would also ensure that the town redeemed its past glory in all sectors including education, health and economics.

Dr Jimmy Heymann, a Medical Officer and the National Organiser of the Union, in a talk noted that HIV/AIDS could wipe out the human race and appealed to youth to desist immoral lifestyles.

Ms Christine Churcher, MP for Cape Coast and Minister of State in charge of Basic, Secondary and Girl Child Education, called for the instilling of the habit of reading among children.

Osabarimba Kwesi Atta II, Omanhene of the Oguaa Traditional Area, Chaired the function while the Reverend David Ansah of the Ghana National Fire Service, inducted the nine-member national executive into office.
