Members of the Old Vandals Association who are made up of past students of Commonwealth Hall, which is the only all-male hall of the University of Ghana-Legon, have officially launched the Commonwealth Hall Annex Building Project during their annual Jamboree celebrations.
Addressing 2019, annual Jamboree celebrations held in Accra, the Hall Master of Commonwealth, Professor Frank. K. Nyame revealed that the Commonwealth Hall Annex Building Project will have a total number of student occupancy of about 4,200 with 4 floors, comprising blocks from A-D.
He said the University Authorities and the Old Vandals Association are expected to cut sod for the about 30 million dollar new Commonwealth Hall Annex Project in this month of July, 2019.
Former Appeals Court Judge, Justice Kwaku Gyan who led the Old Vandals to formally launch the Annex Building Project urged all Old Vandals and the University Authority to see the project as a dream come true, as it will ease the accommodation challenges of the University.
He hinted that the quality of the facility is very congenial for university education which should be very welcoming news for all.
Chairman of the Jamboree Celebrations, Mr. Franklin Benefo, an Old Vandal announced that although 1st July which used to be a national holiday was the date for the Jamboree celebrations is no longer a holiday, the first Saturday of the month of July in every year will be set aside to celebrate the Jamboree.
The Old Vandals mark the annual Jamboree celebrations, to bring together all past students of Commonwealth Hall of the University of Ghana, to get together and plan for the progress and future of the Hall, while reminiscing about their past lives as students of the great all-male Hall of the University of Ghana.
This year, the Old Vandals also made contributions towards the refurbishment of the halls lavatories. Out of a targeted amount of $100,000, so far, about $38,000 have been raised as contributions are still being made to the North American President of the Association, Dr. Kwabena Arthur Kennedy.
Several distinguished and noticeable VANDALS attended the 2019 Jamboree including, Former Appeals Court Judge, Justice Kwaku Gyan, MD of Anglogold Ashanti, Eric Esubonteng, rector of GIMPA, Prof. Philip Ebow Bondzi-Simpson, rector of GIJ, Prof. Kwamena Kwansa-Aidoo, Commissioner of Insurance, Justice Yaw Ofori (a.k.a. ammunition), Former Hall Master, Prof. Harry Akusah, current hall master Prof.
Frank K. Nyame, National Organiser of the NPP, Sammy Awuku and many other dignitaries.
Other noticeable VANDALS who often grace the annual Jamboree include, Former President Jonh Dramani Mahama, Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Joe Osei Owusu, Minority leader Haruna Iddrisu, former Minister of Trade, Ekow Spio Gabrah, Comptroller General, Ghana Immigration Service, Kwame Asuah Takyi, Prof Agyeman Badu Akosa, Nana Akuako Sarpong, former IGP Peter Nanfuri, CEO of Petroleum Commission, Egbert Faibille Jnr, CEO National Petroleum Authority, Dr. Hassan Tampuli etc.
President of the National Old Vandals Association, Mr. Akwasi Sarpong used the occasion to urge all VANDALS across the world to endeavor and attend the next Jamboree which will be held on the first Saturday of July in 2020 and also join to contribute in uplifting the status of the Hall.
