Social media has been flooded with old pictures of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Parliamentary Candidate for Amenfi Central, Juana Gyan, spotted working at a galamsey site.

In one of the pictures taken on July 24, 2016, the aspiring Member of Parliament is seen busily engaged in the gold extraction process in an area believed to be a forest.

In another picture, the young politician, who is nicknamed by some residents as 'Wassa Aisha Huang,' is seen leaning against some equipment used for galamsey, while in the company of a White man, and another person.

Another video of her in an interview with Delay, in which she confessed to being a 'galamseyer' has also re-surfaced.

"I was eight years old when I started doing galamsey. I was born into mining. My family is into mining and agriculture. So, all I know is mining and agriculture," she stated in the video.

Following the viral circulation of the pictures, netizens have questioned the NDC Parliamentary Candidate's commitment to the fight against galamsey, which has destroyed large tracts of farmlands and water bodies in the country.

The photos emerged at a time when the NDC running mate, Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, speaking at a campaign rally at Wassa with the NDC parliamentary candidate standing next to her, said the NDC has no intention of banning galamsey in the area.

"We won't stop you from doing galamsey when you vote for NDC. We will train you so you do it professionally," Naana Jane Opoku-Agyeman said in the video.

In recent weeks, the fight against galamsey has intensified, with growing calls from citizens for the government to take decisive actions soon.

Various groups, including the Democracy Hub, have led protests to demand an end to illegal mining activities, with some demonstrators facing legal consequences for their actions.
