Nana Yaa Jantuah, a Presidential Staffer at the Office of the Presidency, has raised concerns about the Office of the Special Prosecutor's decision to allow former Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta, to appear before it on June 2, 2025, despite previously declaring him a fugitive.
On February 12, 2025, the OSP officially labelled Ofori-Atta as a wanted fugitive after it said it had made repeated attempts to secure his presence for an investigation proved futile.
During a press conference, the OSP said that Ofori-Atta had been informed he was a suspect in connection with four related cases and was requested to appear in person on February 10, 2025.
The Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng, further disclosed that Ofori-Atta's legal counsel had communicated that the former minister was out of the country indefinitely due to medical reasons.
The letter assured the OSP that they would be notified upon his return and requested a rescheduling of the date for his appearance.
But in response to this latest development, Nana Yaa Jantuah stated in an interview with Accra-based United Television that Ken Ofori-Atta showed disrespect to Ghanaians by initially committing to appear before the OSP on the specified date but failed to do so.
She also questioned the basis of the agreement between the OSP and Ken Ofori-Atta that permitted him to reschedule his appearance to June 2.
“He assured Ghanaians that he would return to the country by March 15, yet today is March 18, and he is still absent. Where is he? Despite claiming to be unwell, he managed to summon the government’s Special Prosecutor to court, alleging harassment at his residence. But where was he when others faced harassment in 2017? Did he understand human rights then?
"The same disrespect that led to votes against them is now being shown again. He gave the country a specific date to appear, and still, he hasn’t honoured it. How can the OSP now ask him to appear on June 2? On what basis or agreement, when he himself committed to March 15?” she quizzed.
Elaborating on her concerns about Ofori-Atta, Nana Yaa Jantuah argued that he should prioritise his health instead of engaging in legal battles.
Additionally, she criticised his refusal to address Ghanaians regarding the reasons behind the OSP's decision to declare him a fugitive.
She inquired; “Does he truly grasp the meaning of human rights? He promised to return on March 15, but now the OSP has extended his deadline to June 2, even though he gave no valid excuse, duty, or hospital letter to justify his absence.
“He claims to be sick, yet he has the energy to engage in litigation. Have you ever seen a genuinely sick person prioritising legal battles over recovery? When one is ill, the focus is on regaining health, not on other matters. Yet, he refuses to address Ghanaians about the $58 million issue he promised to clarify on March 15,” she added.
