One billion cedis worth of cocaine seized, ... but no arrest

According to the Pioneer, Ghana's oldest newspaper, the Customs and Excise Service (CEPS) in Ghana recently seized a parcel which contained 10 sachets of cocaine weighing 3.3 kilos with a street value of 1 billion cedis. However no arrest was made!

Briefing the press on the "modus operandi", Mr Joseph Owusu, chief collector of CEPS in charge of narcotics said the cocaine was concealed in a compartment of 5 albums and labelled as manufacturer's samples.

The parcel was mailed from Brazil and addressed to West Line Contractors, Private Mail Bag, Mamprobi Accra. But according to Mr Owusu the addressee failed to collect the parcel and after the expiry of the mandatory 28 days the parcel was being returned to the sender when CEPS intercepted it at the airport. Investigations revealed that the addresses for both sender and addressee were non- existent.
