One of the staff members of South East Dock Labour, a private maritime company, has lost his life in a workplace accident.

This tragic incident happened around 10:30pm on Saturday, April 7, 2018, when empty containers were being loaded onto a foreign vessel docked at the port.

Eyewitnesses said the deceased, Simon Mensah, an employee of South East Dock Labour and a resident of New Takoradi, slipped and fell into the sea, but his body has since been washed ashore at New Takoradi beach after almost 12 hours of relentless search by the crew of the container ship, MV Grandi, the patrol boats unit, as well as other dockworkers.

Residents of New Takoradi are very angry because they alleged that authorities have decided to twist the story to favour the company.

Although the company has not officially responded to the issue and what exactly might have caused the accident, residents believe some officials want to cover up.

Emmanuel Addade, one of the community members who confirmed the incident, charged authorities to come out to state their position or risk incurring the displeasure of the community.

The deceased was described as a calm and hardworking person who devoted his energy to his duties in the company.

Officials of the Takoradi Port have not also responded or reacted to speculations about the untimely demise of the worker.
