An accident that occurred on Sunday at Buipe, Central Gonja District of the Savannah Region has claimed the life of a young lady and another sustaining severe injury.

The deceased identified as Hamdia and her friend were riding a motorbike from the Lito Junction in Buipe while the articulator truck was also traveling from Tamale towards Buipe township when the accident happened.

According to an eyewitness, the driver of the truck beeped his horn behind the ladies to alert them of coming vehicles but they became confused and lost control of the motorbike.

The eyewitness said there were some parked cars on the bicycle lane which created no space for them to pass and so the ladies hit the back of the truck after the rear tyres had escaped them.

He narrated that the lady at the back of the motorbike jumped off and fell on the bicycle but the exhaust pipe of the motorbike got stuck to the back wheels of the truck and the rider's head was run over by the vehicle.

Her head was crushed by the back tyres and she died on the spot while her colleague was rushed to the Buipe Health Centre for treatment.

Eyewitnesses immediately rushed to the scene and covered the corpse with some clothes and rushed the injured to the hospital and had to direct the flood of traffic that was created around the scene of the accident.

However, the atmosphere of grief and mourning took a sudden turn when the driver of the truck who had escaped narrowly appeared in another truck and was harassed by some angry youth but he was not hurt.

The Central Gonja District Police Command were not also spared insults when they appeared at the incident for turning up late after onlookers had phoned them to report the accident.

The dead had been sent home for burial in accordance with Islamic Law on Monday while the injured was transferred from the Buipe Health Centre to the Tamale Teaching Hospital for further treatment.
