One person has been killed and several others have been injured in a chieftaincy dispute in the Bunkpurugu/Nakpanduri District of the North-East Region.
According to a report by citinewsroom.com, the dispute also led to the burning of several houses in the Naniik and Binbagu communities.
It added that the General Manager of Pib-ri FM, a community radio station in Binde-Bunkpurugu, Sunday Batowani, explained that the violence began when the Youth Chief of Nanik was shot while in the company of one Elijah, who died on the spot and his body briefly preserved at the Binde hospital morgue.
On Monday, September 23, 2024, while preparations were underway to lay Elijah to rest, there was a second attack, which led to a reprisal attack that forced residents to flee the two communities.
A 5:30am to 6pm curfew has been imposed in the area by local authorities to help calm the situation, while awaiting national intervention, the report added.
