Renewed violence in Chereponi left one shot and some communities belonging to both Konkombas and Chokosis burnt.

A 22-year-old Jababu Fuad who was shot on Friday evening by some unidentified persons at Nawieku is in critical condition receiving treatment at the Cheriponi Hospital.

The victim was shot twice: one in the right thigh and another in the right arm.

“Police reinforcement has been sent to the area to help deal with the situation”, the Northern Regional Police Public Relations Officer DSP Mohammed Yussif said on Saturday.

The police is making efforts to engage the leadership of both ethnic groups, 3news.com gathered.

There has been longstanding tension between the two factions, who had even planned a showdown on March 6.

The Member of Parliament of Saboba Constituency, Charles Bintim, and his colleague from the Chereponi Constituency Samuel Jabanyiti had relayed the disturbing development to the Minister of Defence and MP for the Bimbila Constituency Dominic Nitiwul.

They visited these communities as part of efforts to defuse the rising tension between the two tribes who have been at each other’s throat over a parcel of land at Nanduni, a community in Chereponi.

Over 10 people have been killed between June 2018 and January 2019 as a result of clashes involving the feuding factions.

The police is investigating the cause of the latest attacks.
