One person was fatally wounded and rushed to the Akosombo Hospital on Thursday when a group of youths clashed with policemen detailed to remove illegal speed rumps recently created on the Ho-Accra trunk road at Apeguso and Frankadua.
The name of the injured person was not immediately known.
A source at the Volta Regional Police Command told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that following accidents and complaints from motorists that the rumps were damaging their vehicles, the Volta Regional Security Committee (VREGSEC) decided on Wednesday to clear them.
The source said the Eastern Regional Police Command was duly informed about the action since the area was under its command saying, motorist affected were normally those commuting to and from the Volta Regional capital Ho, Hohoe and the Northern sector of the region.
The source said the rumps damaged the exhaust of vehicles with "low clearance."
It said road rumps could only be made under the supervision and specification of the Ghana Highway Authority (GHA), adding that there had been several accidents on that stretch of the road since the rumps were created.
Meanwhile, Police reinforcement had been sent to the area to maintain the peace.
When the GNA contacted Mr Kofi Duku Arthur, Volta Regional Police Commander, he confirmed the incident, saying if action was not taken other towns along the trunk road would take the law into their own hands and create illegal speed rumps.
