Cape Coast, (Central Region) 22 Sept.,
The University of Cape Coast will admit only 1,400 students out of 5,293 applicants this 1997-98 academic year due to lack of accommodation facilities and lecturers. Professor Jophus Anamuah-Mensah, Pro-Vice Chancellor of the UCC who announced this at a press conference in Cape Coast today, said all fresh students would be admitted on non-residential basis. He said the situation is an unpleasant one for the university but it has no alternative. The Pro-Vice Chancellor said out of the 2,620 continuing students, only 785 passed out last year to make room for the university to admit the 1,400 students. He said currently, 48 per cent of the students are non-resident and there are no accommodation facilities nearby to house them even if the rest of the qualified applicants are admitted as non-residential students. ''What we need is the expansion of the facilities and human resources (lecturers),'' he said. Prof. Anamuah-Mensah said to ensure safety of all students in the halls, the university has banned the use of gas cookers, fridges and deep freezers. The university, he said, would re-open on Friday, October 3rd for fresh students while continuing students would report on Friday, October 10. He said the university has given September 30, this year, as the deadline for students who have been offered admission to notify the university of their acceptance of the offer. He asked students in other regions to contact the Institute of Adult Education in the various regions for the results of admissions.
