Residents of Osu have embarked on a peaceful demonstration calling for a halt to the illegal sale of portions of the Achimota Forest.
Speaking to GH One TV on Monday, August 12, 2024, the Dzaase Asafoatse of Osu, Nii Tempong Sarpei III, lamented the rampant sale of lands in the Achimota forest to certain individuals.
According to him, several properties belonging to the Osu traditional area and communities have been sold to private developers, an action he believes must be protested.
This action was necessitated after some plots of land were seen being graded with heavy equipment by some individuals.
He, however, disclosed that a petition has been presented to the forestry commission to address their grievances.
“This morning, we are here about Achimota Forest... Today the Dzaase Asafoatse and Asafo people are here to make sure we put things in order. Last week we saw people grading the place (Achimota Forest), so we came here to see the forestry chairman to present our petition to him, but unfortunately, when we came, he is not here, but the deputy is here so we just delivered the message to him, and they have accepted it and they say they are going to take care of it”, he stated.
Nii Tempong Sarpei further asserted that some individuals are taking advantage of the chieftaincy disputes in Osu to seize their lands.
He, therefore, called for a collective effort among all traditional areas to fight against and resist the illegal sale of properties in the community.
“I want to tell Osu people that we are not here fighting over chieftaincy anything, we are here about our properties. Osu properties are going just like that; if you check our bungalows, lands, everything is going and the youth too we don’t know anything about it. Now we have woken up, we just want to make sure things are put in order. We are calling all areas in Osu to all come together to fight one fight”, he pleaded.
