The Akyode Paramount Chief, Nana Obonbo Sewura Lepuwura II, is upbeat the Volta Region will be divided despite “several attempts by southerners to soil the process”.

He is optimistic there would be an overwhelming endorsement for the creation of a new region in the Northern Territory after the December 27 referendum.

“Indeed the die is cast and there is no point of return in ensuring the Oti Region is born in the same month of the symbolic birth of Jesus Christ, the son of the living God”, he said.

He was speaking at a meeting of the Akyode Traditional Council in the Nkwanta South Municipality of the Volta Region.

Nana Obonbo, however, appealed to traditional authorities in the Oti Enclave not to be complacent, but continue preaching prospects of the new region, to warrant meeting requirements in the referendum.

He said “the constitution of the Republic of Ghana provides that on the day of referendum, at least 50% of voters registered in the affected area should cast their votes and out of this proportion, at least 80% should say yes to the separation and for that matter the birth of the new region.”

“This is why we are here today to encourage all those who have registered to come out and vote yes for Oti Region, a no vote is an abomination and should not happen”, he added.

Nana Obonbo who is also the President of the Akyode Traditional Council, implored churches to schedule their annual Christmas conventions to end before December 27, the referendum day.

This he said will allow residents, who are mostly Christians ample time to participate in the referendum and ensure all the requirements are met.
