Over 300 houses to be demolished in Wa

The Upper West Regional Lands Commission and the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) have issued a two-week ultimatum to over 300 illegal occupants of a parcel of land earmarked for the Wa Airstrip to produce legal documents showing ownership of the land or have their houses demolished.

According to the acting Upper West Regional Lands Commissioner, Yaw Acheampong Amoah, the land was acquired appropriately by government in 1958 hence there would not be the need to pay compensation to encroachers.

The exercise is to make space for the construction of an airstrip and subsequent start of commercial flights to the region.

Rafik Salam reports that some landlords claim they have documents to prove they own the lands hence they must be compensated.

Other residents have expressed anger at the intended demolition exercise.
