Accra, July 7, GNA - The People's National Convention (PNC) on Thursday urged the Government to accept the criticisms of the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM) Report and take steps to address its shortcomings.
The PNC said it was happy that President John Agyekum Kufuor agreed to subject his government to be reviewed because the principle behind the mechanism conformed to the Party's stance on transparency, accountability and the rule of law with regard to governance.
"Whilst applauding the NPP Government in respect of their gesture to the (APRM), it surprises the PNC that there are attempts by spin doctors of the NPP regime as well as certain people, who should know better to distance the Kufuor regime from the shortcomings of the report whilst at the same time taking credit for the positive sides of the same report.
"To the PNC, this posture is not only unfortunate. This is because it may go a long way to undermine ...the entire concept of the mechanism."
The Party said for the APRM to be realistic and beneficial to Ghanaians, it must target and subject areas like the Presidency, Executive, Legislature, Judiciary, Media; Serious Fraud Office; Commission for Human Rights and Administrative Justice and National Commission for Civic Education to strict public scrutiny.
