Accra, July 20, GNA - The Ghana National Union of Polytechnic Students (GNUPS) on Thursday appealed to the government to act quickly in finding a solution to the strikes by the Polytechnic Teachers Association of Ghana (POTAG) and Teachers and Education Workers Union (TEWU).
It also appealed to bodies such as the Council of State, National House of Chiefs and Christian Council of Ghana to add their voices to their plea to government for a quick resolution of the problems facing polytechnic education.
"The pace at which government is addressing the concerns regarding POTAG and TEWU is economically and academically unacceptable," the Union said in a statement issued in Accra.
The students warned that if by July 26 the government failed to address their concerns, they would embark in indefinite demonstrations nationwide and asked all students to return to their campuses by that date.
The statement signed by Mr Leopold Atinyo, National Press and Information Officer, said the period of the strike by the two bodies had plunged them into "emotional and psychological trauma". It said the Union believed that Government wanted to see progress in polytechnic education, hence the development of infrastructure on the various campuses.
"However, the inability of government to improve the human resource base, that is, POTAG and TEWU, of the polytechnic system leaves much to be desired," it said.
"This is the time government must stop paying lip-service to issues of the polytechnic and rather show true commitment to the development of polytechnic education by addressing the legitimate demands of POTAG and TEWU." 20 July 06
