PTA Executives in Awutu appeal for assistance

Awutu Mankessim (C/R), Nov. 17, GNA - The Awutu-Effutu-Senya District Secretariat of the Commission for Human Right And Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) has held two separates fora at Awutu Mankessim and Awutu Bawjiase to sensitise school children in the area on their basic rights and freedoms.

The occasion formed part of activities in commemoration of the United Nation's Children Right Day celebration in the district, during which large number of school children in the area participated. Speaking at the occasion at Awutu Bawjiase, the head teacher of the Anglican JSS, Madam Margaret Tettey appealed to the Ghana Education Service (GES) to help roof their building to ensure un-interrupted teaching and learning at the school.

According to her, the old school building was destroyed in a rainstorm some years back and work on a new one being built by the District Assembly has come to a standstill, for the past two years, due to financial problems.

Madam Tettey said the situation had compelled classes to be held in an open space and a dilapidated building, saying that "anytime, it threatens to rain, classes have to be abandoned".

At Awutu Mankessim Catholic School, the PTA chairperson, Madam Kate Amankwando, expressed concern about gradual collapsing of the school, which she said had resulted in the withdrawal of most children by their parents.

She said the PTA have not been able to raise funds to rehabilitate it, due to their weak financial position and appealed to the Ghana Education Service (GES) and NGOs, especially Plan Ghana to help them put up a new school block for the children.

The Bawjiase Area Development Committee Chairman, Mr Ben Afful suggested that both past and present assembly members be involved in the generation of revenue to help improve the financial base of the assembly.

He further advised the Awutu Traditional Council to appoint a chief to be solely responsible for youth development in Awutu Bawjiase.
