The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has issued a directive to Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) to restore water supply to the Greater Kumasi area, including Bantama, Atonso, Santasi, and Ridge, following reports of service interruptions since Friday, December 13, 2024.
In a statement released by the Commission on December 16, 2024, PURC expressed disapproval of the situation, describing it as a violation of citizens' fundamental right to access clean and safe water.
The interruption in water supply has reportedly caused significant inconvenience to residents and raised public health concerns.
PURC highlighted that in moments of interruptions, service providers are supposed to adhere to specific regulations under the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (Consumer Service) Regulations 2020 (L.I. 2413).
Regulation 4 of L.I. 2413 stipulates that utility providers are prohibited from denying service access to consumers except for clearly stated reasons that can be reviewed by the Commission.
"Utility providers are legally required to resolve operational challenges through appropriate channels without penalizing consumers," part of the statement said.
The Commission assured the public that it would closely monitor the situation and take further action to safeguard the interests of consumers if necessary.
