Parliament has approved a credit agreement between the government of Ghana and CAL Bank Ghana Limited for the medium term loan facility of US$13,912,750 and €3,484,457 for the procurement of vehicle and communication equipment for the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF).
The purpose of the loan facility is to procure the needed logistics to enable the Ghana Armed Forces carry out their duties effectively in the upcoming presidential and parliamentary elections.
Moving the motion, the Chairman of the Finance Committee, James Klutse Avedzi observed that there was the need to ensure free and fair elections to avoid the country being plunged into election crisis.
He said it was necessary to enhance the mobility of the Security Forces in order for them to administer their duties professionally.
Mr. Klutse Avedzi said the committee noted that the specialisations of the Vehicles will ensure they meet basic military standards to enhance deployment in rugged terrain.
He added that the basic military standard include 4 wheel drive, protective guard in front, communication facility and re-configuring of single Cabin Pick-Ups for the purpose of lifting.
The Committee Chairman indicated that Officers from the Ghana Armed Forces informed the Committee that the buses required are to be used to supplement the existing fleet of Troop Carrying Vehicles, to lift troopers from location to operational areas especially for medical cover.**
