Parliament to grill Education Minister over UEW counsel

Minister for Education Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyeman Minister for Education Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyeman

The Minister for Education Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyeman is expected to answer questions in parliament over the absence of a counsel at the University of Education, Winneba.

Her imminent appearance before the House is as a result of an urgent question filed by the Effutu MP Alex Afenyo-Markin over the absence of a council at the University.

“The tenure of the council expired in 2013 and since then the minister and the office of the president have failed to appoint new nominees to run affairs of the University,” Mr. Afenyo-Markin said.

According to the MP, the absence of a council is affecting the current running of the institution.

He added that a court may be forced to compel the Education Minister to constitute a counsel for the university.

“There may be far reaching implications should a court compel the minister to do what is needful,” he said.

The term of the last council expired in 2013 but the education ministry and the presidency have since failed to replace government appointees onto the governing body of the University.
