Atik Mohammed has slammed the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, over the current parliamentary impasse.
The former PNC General Secretary was one of the main supporters of the Speaker when he pronounced some seats as vacant. His reason for supporting the Rt. Hon. Bagbin was that he (Bagbin) needed to assert the authority of Parliament.
However, Atik feels the Speaker is overdoing things and hence blames him for the confusion in Parliament.
To him, the Speaker's behavior shows he is not committed to ensuring Parliament continues its business.
"I feel now that what is going on is an attempt to stifle productivity of the House... If care is not taken, Parliament will never sit before the life of this Parliament comes to an end," he said.
He stressed that the conduct of Speaker Bagbin is now becoming counterproductive, stating he doesn't see him (Bagbin) "genuinely" wanting "the business of Parliament to continue."
Atik, making his submissions on Peace FM's "Kokrokoo" show, advised the Speaker to review his position, saying, "You've shown the point. You've proven the point that Parliament needs to be assertive when the need arises, but going forward, there is no point to prove anymore."
He added, "The only point you will succeed in proving if you continue doing what you are doing is that Ghanaians will suffer. You will be denying us from enjoying the services of our representatives, and that is not fair to us."
"He should think beyond some of the petty considerations that inspired his decision and look at the bigger picture, which is the national interest," Atik emphasized.
