Peace industry creating fear and panic – Nana Akomea

Director of Communication of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Akomea, has described as deafening, calls for peace ahead of the Supreme Court ruling on the presidential election petition challenging John Mahama’s presidency.

He said the activities of the "peace industry" even though for a good cause are rather causing panic in the country.

Nana Akomea expressed the concern on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme on Monday.

Ahead of the August 29 judgement day on the election petition, the media landscape has been inundated with calls for peace after the verdict.

Peace activities championed by the National Peace Council, civil society and religious groups have been organized to sensitize Ghanaians, especially members of the NPP and the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) to accept the Supreme Court ruling to foster national peace and cohesion.

However, Nana Akomea on Ekosii Sen expressed worry about the incessant calls which he says is having a negative impact on the country.

According to him, Ghanaians have come to the realization that the nine member panel of judges hearing the case will give their ruling based on law and evidence, hence do not need peace campaigners to remind them.

Nana Akomea added that the commitment by both petitioners and respondents involved in the case to accept the final ruling should climax the call for peace.

"If the parties involved in the case accept the final verdict, all their members will follow suit".

The NPP Communications Director said for the past two months, he has received several invitations to one peace seminar or another and wondered whether it is worth it.

He believes the people in this "peace industry" are really cashing-in and creating a panic situation in the country.

Nana Akomea also chided the security agencies for also contributing to the seeming tension in the country.

He stated that the security agencies’ public display of armory to show their readiness is unnecessary.

Nana Akomea was convinced that Ghana will be the winner after the final ruling by the Supreme Court.
