Petitioner files appeal against High Court ruling on KNUST VC’s reappointment

Clement Kofi Asare, who challenged the reappointment of Prof. Rita Akosua Dickson as Vice-Chancellor of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), has filed an appeal against the Kumasi High Court’s decision.

The High Court dismissed his case on Tuesday, July 30, ruling that the suit lacked merit.

In his latest petition to the Court of Appeal, Kofi Asare argued that the trial judge erred in dismissing the case, calling the verdict a “travesty of justice.”

He is seeking a review of the decision, asserting that the reappointment process was flawed and should be reconsidered.

It remains unclear whether the defendants in this latest lawsuit have been served. This fresh controversy comes as the vice-chancellor officially begins her second term on Thursday, August 1.

As her new mandate coincides with her birthday, Prof. Dickson reportedly led a powerful prayer session, seeking divine intervention amidst the growing tension.

Meanwhile, the leadership of the Ashanti Youth Association (AYA) is taking steps to meet stakeholders over the issue following a petition from the KNUST branch of the Asante Students Union.

The Secretary of the Association, Tweneboah Kodua, stated that they would seek the intervention of the Manhyia Palace to resolve the impasse.

“As I speak with you, the president of AYA has directed me that we should write to the office of the governing council and the school administration to engage them and understand what is happening. We also want to meet those who took the matter to court,” asaaseradio.com quotes Kodua to have said.

“KNUST is one of the institutions dear to Asanteman. The Asantehene is the chancellor, and this is happening while the king is not around, so we need to tread cautiously,” he added.
