Aflao, Jan. 27, GNA - A plot by inmates of a police cell at the Aflao Police Station to escape through a hole they had dug in the wall of the cell was foiled at the last minute when one of the inmates exposed his colleagues.
The 13 remand inmates had used a knife believed to have been smuggled into the cell by a visitor to bore a hole, about two feet square in the wall when it was discovered.
Assistant Superintendent of Police, Baba Moro told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that while most of the police personnel were away attending this years WASA in the town the prisoners decided to complete the deal and intensified their efforts.
He said, however, Emmanuel Adjorlolo, a convict prisoner who had been brought from Accra on Friday to face a nine million cedi fraud case at the Aflao Circuit Court and was placed in the same cell with the 13 opposed the plan and reported the matter to the Counter Officer at about 23 hours that night.
The Police had since evacuated the cell of all the 13 who were part of the plot leaving Adjorlolo alone in the cell.
Mr Moro said the Police would repair the damage in the wall in a manner to prevent any such attempt in the future and added that the 13 would be charged for causing harm and attempted escape from lawful custody. He said a similar escape attempt was foiled at the station last year.
