Reverend Monsignor Bobby Benson, Director of Mathew 25 House, an HIV /AIDS and Clinical Pastoral Training Centre in Koforidua, has appealed to the Police Administration to resource its training institutions to enable them to improve their work.
He said despite the supposed salary enhancement of the personnel of the service, adequate logistical constraints remained a challenge and the administration must look at the basic needs and provide the training schools with it for maximum output.
In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) on his comments on last week’s incident where a private vehicle ran into a number of police recruits in Koforidua, he said the police needed more logistics to work.
He observed that the Police Training School in Koforidua has no vehicle and so during the accident, it was public spirited persons who ran errands for the police.
Reverend Bobby Benson said he personally had to transport food on three occasions to the injured on admission at the Regional hospital in Koforidua since the training school had no vehicle.
According to him, the instructors had no reflectors to aid them during dawn trainings and indicated that reflectors were important in the line of training and duties of the police.
Last week, a vehicle run into about 100 Police recruits during dawn training in Koforidua, injuring 10 of them and were rushed to the Regional hospital whiles five who were in critical condition were referred to the Police Hospital in Accra.
Reverend Bobby Benson said facilities at the police training school in Koforidua and barracks were nothing to write home about and the pubic must know of the poor conditions in which the police work to attract support.
He said people should not be blinded with the enhanced salaries of the police service to expect them to work according to expectations because the salaries are for work done and they needed logistics to work with.
Monsignor Bobby Benson commended the recruits for their professional handling of the situation by not lynching the driver and hoped that such manner of professionalism would be exhibited after they had been commissioned fully into the service.
Last year, Reverend Bobby Benson rallied support from organizations in the region to refurbish the police training school in Koforidua. **
