Police Brutality: Suicide claims 'lies' – Victim's mum

Victim Victim

The mother of Ama Agyemang, the 22-year-old woman who was allegedly tortured by the police until she was hospitalised, has refuted claims that her daughter attempted suicide while in custody contrary to the claim by the police.

The victim was sent to the hospital on Friday, 15 June 2018 by the police after suffering severe injuries from the alleged beating.

According to the police, she attempted suicide while she was in custody hence the bruises on her body.

But the victim’s mum, Aunty Erica, told Benjamin Akakpo on the Executive Breakfast Show (EBS) on Class91.3FM on Monday, 18 June 2018 that the cops “lied” about her daughter’s attempt to claim her own life.

“They [police] are lying. How can a woman who had been handcuffed to the bars at the cell, escape from the cuffs, get hold of a rope to attempt to hang herself? It is impossible. They only took her to the hospital when they realised she could not stand on her feet from the severe beatings,” she stated.

Narrating how her daughter got arrested and tortured, Aunty Erica said she was having a disagreement with her daughter over her decision to sell her phone.

While arguing, Ama Agyemang was arrested by two community police personnel and sent to the police station. After her release in the evening, Ama Agyemang confronted a woman she suspected caused her arrest but the woman and her siblings, who are personnel of the community police, pounced on her and beat her up.

They arrested her for the second time and took her to the police station where she was beaten some more until she could not stand on her feet. She was later taken to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital when they realised she had become weak.

Aunty Erica pleaded with the public to support her seek justice because she has no family or money to pursue the case to its logical conclusion.
