The Ashanti Regional branch of the Police Ladies Association of Ghana (POLAG), has launched its 25th anniversary with a call on young ladies to be disciplined and focused.
Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Gloria Agyare, Acting President of the branch, explained that it was high time young ladies eschewed all forms of careless living and studied hard to become useful to society.
DSP Agyare gave the advice after a walk through the principal streets of Kumasi by members, to create awareness of the anniversary, as well as boost the interest and confidence of women, especially young women in the police service, among other security agencies.
She noted that gone were the days when women were recruited into the Ghana Police Service with the mandate to help children cross the streets and search lady suspects upon their arrests.
Women police were only made to go through three months training, instead of the usual six months by their male counterparts, adding that in modern days, police women were heading units, divisions, districts, and being made to guard banks, patrol and others.
The Acting President cited examples as COP Rose Bio-Atinga, Chief Superintendent Deborah Addison Campbell, former president of the Ashanti Regional branch of POLAG, now head of the National Police Training school, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Regina Mintah, head of the Human Trafficking Unit, Ashanti and the rest.
Mrs Agyare, therefore, called on young women not to look down on themselves, but to rise to the occasion, be studious, focused on attaining formal education, to join their male counterpart in serving the country.
She was glad female police had increased from 12 to 7,400 with 1,200 in the Ashanti Region alone.
She outlined other activities for the week-long celebration to include lecture, visit and donation to the female prisons, maternity wing of the Children’s Hospital, all in Kumasi, dinner and a thanks-giving service.
They were joined by their female colleagues from other security agencies, among whom were the Fire ladies, Prisons’ ladies and the CEPS of the Ghana Revenue Authourity.
