Police MTTU takes measures to reduce accidents

Sunyani (B/A), Sept. 20, GNA- As part of measures to curb the increasing spate of road accidents on the country's roads, the Sunyani Police Motor Traffic and Transport Union (MTTU) has put forward a sustained programme to reduce accidents in the municipality and beyond. ASP Cosmos A. Damoah, the Officer In-Charge of MTTU told the Ghana News Agency on Tuesday that the exercise was launched by the MTTU in collaboration with the Regional Road Safety Committee and the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority(DVLA) to let sanity prevail on the roads, following the high incidence of motor accidents.

ASP Damoah said the road safety exercise, which started last Tuesday subsequently led to the arrest of 35 drivers who committed various motor traffic offences, including using fake or inappropriate licences, vehicles without reflectors and rickety vehicles. He said the drivers have been put before court and are currently standing trial.

ASP Damoah stated that although accidents in the municipality were not on the increase the MTTU was not relenting on its efforts to reduce the carnage on the road, adding that his outfit would extend the programme to the Techiman Municipality and other communities in the region.

He added that the team had already organised similar programmes in Goaso where drivers were educated on road safety regulations. He appealed to drivers and pedestrians to exercise patience when driving and endeavour to observe motor traffic regulations to minimize the incidence of road accidents.
